iPad: 5 Potential Business Uses

Posted by roveshia On March - 2 - 2010

Here are a few practical business cases for the iPad.  Hopefully this will help you in deciding whether you should have one as part of your work arsenal.  And remember, these are just a few ideas – I’m sure you can think of plenty more:

1. Spreadsheets and Docs On-the-Go: You can purchase iWorks for the iPad ($9.99 per app).  That means you can edit docs, fill in spreadsheets, and build presentations.  You’re always going to build docs faster in a Mac, but it’s a smart way to edit and make revisions.

2. Social Notetaking: The iPad is compatible with every iPhone app, meaning that you can run Evernote to write down notes in the field, access picture archives from your team, and record voice notes that you can send to others later.  Evernote’s one of the best notetaking products on the market, and the iPad will make it far more useful.

3. Portable Screen/Presentation Machine: The device has a crisp display perfect for showing off videos during a presentation.  It’s also likely that you can use it as a presentation machine, although you might need an adapter for it.

4. Transferable Customer Display: In a bank, a teller often has to turn his screen towards the customer to show him exactly what’s going on with an account.  With an iPad, all the teller or customer service rep has to do is hand it to the customer to review for themselves.  Customers can even play with the numbers and options in that type of interface.  You could simply build a web app to accomplish this, too.

5. Full Web Access: After the apps, the iPad’s strongest feature is simply its fast and elegant web browsing.  The Apple A4 processor helps it load pages rapidly, while the larger screen gives you the opportunity to find whatever you need on the web while on-the-go.  3G access + web browsing is definitely a big win for businesses who have team members that are always on-the-go.

Review of newly released Windows 7 Location Sensor

Posted by roveshia On March - 1 - 2010

A software based GPS for use in Windows 7 has been developed and released by Rafael Rivera and Long Zheng.

The software installs a Windows 7 Sensor into the operating system that allows third party applications to become location aware. Dubbed “Geosense for Windows”, the software uses the Sensors platform introduced in Windows 7.

Geosense is a Windows Sensor that provides positioning information. The sensor utilises the Google Location Services for WiFi and IP triangulation to provide reasonably accurate location data.

Rivera, the developer behind Geosense, claims that future updates could include support for location services such as Skyhook Wireless and Navizon, providing there’s a demand for it. A combination of different location services would improve location data.

How does it work?

The application is packaged in an installer for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 versions. The installer will create a Windows 7 Sensor named “Geosense” that will interact with Google’s location services to pinpoint your location. It works best with a Wi-Fi enabled PC or laptop but will work over any IP connection. Windows 7 will notify you each time your location is accessed by a third party application.

w72

Why do I need it? What does it work with?

At this moment in time the Windows Sensor platform is lacking to say the least. Very few developers have built support for the Sensor platform into their products. Geosense claims that Mahtweets (twitter client), Windows 7’s weather gadget and a specially designed Google Maps client will all utilize the Sensor. Rivera confirmed Geosense are working closely with several companies to build support for Windows 7 Sensors but declined to name any organisations.

Geosense is available free for both Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit editions.

Review of Antivirus 2010

Posted by roveshia On February - 1 - 2010

main1

Norton AntiVirus 2010 is the latest version of the Best Selling AntiVirus Program from Symantec. Norton Antivirus has been one of the oldest antivirus available in the market and it has been scrutinized by many of us in the tech community to find all its faults. While the versions that are a few years old meant that it would slow down your system eating up all your system resources, the 2009 version of Norton Anti Virus certainly showed up the trend to speed up the performance and clear the system resource hungry issues out of its way. Here are the requirements of Norton Antivirus 2010.

System Requirements

  • Windows XP / Vista / Windows 7
  • At least 300 MHz Processor
  • 256 MB RAM
  • 200 MB Free Hard Disk Space
  • CD Drive needed if not installed via electronic download

Installation
The installation of Norton Antivirus 2010 was simple and did not require system reboot. The installation was fast and required only a few minutes to complete. It is one of the easiest softwares to install.

n1

Features

n21

Norton Download Insight
It warns of the dangerous downloads that may be threats. This feature is a new one from the older 2009 version.

n3

Norton File Insight
It works quite the same as the Download Insight and warns you of the malicious files residing on your computer. This is also a new feature introduced on Norton Antivirus 2010.

n4

Norton System Insight
The System Insight Feature offers details of computer’s resource usage. The Norton Scheduler delays updates or scans or other functions when the computer is idle. This makes the system appear more speedy and less noticeable slow downs when the system is updating or scanning.

n5

Virus Scanner
The virus scanner has three modes. Quick Scan offers scanning of the most important areas of your system which is most likely to be attacked. The Full System scan performs its job as expected and also does this very fast. A full system scan on my 80GB HDD took less than an hour making it one of the fastest AntiVirus in the market. Using the custom scan mode you can scan any particular area that you want the AntiVirus to scan.

n6

Performance
In this section we’ll discuss how it affects the system performance rather than how well it protects your computer.

- The overall system startup time wasn’t affected too much. It added around 7 seconds to the total startup time.
- The system uses minimal amount of RAM, around 10-12 MB, which means it will not eat up the memory required by any heavy programs like Photoshop or Firefox.
- The Applications like Firefox took a little bit longer to launch than normal. - The installation folder measured around 100 MB and the whole thing ate up around 150MB Disk Space.

n7

Conclusion
At the end of the day, Norton AntiVirus 2010 is the lightest and fastest malware scanner that Symantec has ever delivered. The scanning is fast and it uses less memory than most other AntiVirus products on the market. You won’t regret using this product untill some better contender comes out from behind the bush. For now, the Norton Antivirus 2010 is recommended by us.

Like a lot of social apps, it will only get better as more people contribute, so join up and get buzzing.
2  Pandora (Free Download Pandora)

pandora2This is the  best streaming music site on the BlackBerry. The Mobile version has been streamlined enough to play just fine over EDGE connections, meaning you’re able to listen pretty much anywhere you get decent signal, not just in major cities. The iPhone 3.0 Update IS Coming Today

Posted by Admin On June - 17 - 2009

Well, that was a close call. I’ll admit, I was tricked too at first by a link going around on Twitter right now stating that the iPhone 3.0 software’s launch was pushed to tomorrow. It’s an Apple site that lists the launch date for the update as June 18, tomorrow. The only problem is that the site is Apple’s Singapore website, where the update was always scheduled to be released on that date.

If you go to Apple’s actual U.S. website, you’ll see that the launch here is still slated for sometime today. So ignore the tweets that are undoubtedly filing up your screen right now. iPhone 3.0 will be released at some point today — though those hoping for a midnight launch were disappointed — and the iPhone 3G S will be out on Friday. The online pre-order units have already shipped, and are in the U.S., but word is they may still not get delivered until Friday.picture-37-630x25esr347
