Xbox Live game on Windows Phone 7 Series

Posted by Anglina On March - 7 - 2010

Microsoft’s Eric Rudder had the opportunity to show what we can expect from games that have a foot in multiple worlds; console, computer, and mobile phone. The rudder to display showed the same game (Indiana Jones), which played on multiple platforms. Windows 7 Series handset accelerometer used to control the movement and take advantage of that appear on the screen to jump.

This type of scenario is fully compatible with Microsoft’s “three screens and the cloud” approach to life and the universe, and everything. And the ability to start one game and that it could easily continue on another machine would be a real coup for a company that has a much larger footprint in the world services than any other company in the smartphone.

iPad: 5 Potential Business Uses

Posted by roveshia On March - 2 - 2010

Here are a few practical business cases for the iPad.  Hopefully this will help you in deciding whether you should have one as part of your work arsenal.  And remember, these are just a few ideas – I’m sure you can think of plenty more:

1. Spreadsheets and Docs On-the-Go: You can purchase iWorks for the iPad ($9.99 per app).  That means you can edit docs, fill in spreadsheets, and build presentations.  You’re always going to build docs faster in a Mac, but it’s a smart way to edit and make revisions.

2. Social Notetaking: The iPad is compatible with every iPhone app, meaning that you can run Evernote to write down notes in the field, access picture archives from your team, and record voice notes that you can send to others later.  Evernote’s one of the best notetaking products on the market, and the iPad will make it far more useful.

3. Portable Screen/Presentation Machine: The device has a crisp display perfect for showing off videos during a presentation.  It’s also likely that you can use it as a presentation machine, although you might need an adapter for it.

4. Transferable Customer Display: In a bank, a teller often has to turn his screen towards the customer to show him exactly what’s going on with an account.  With an iPad, all the teller or customer service rep has to do is hand it to the customer to review for themselves.  Customers can even play with the numbers and options in that type of interface.  You could simply build a web app to accomplish this, too.

5. Full Web Access: After the apps, the iPad’s strongest feature is simply its fast and elegant web browsing.  The Apple A4 processor helps it load pages rapidly, while the larger screen gives you the opportunity to find whatever you need on the web while on-the-go.  3G access + web browsing is definitely a big win for businesses who have team members that are always on-the-go.

Review of newly released Windows 7 Location Sensor

Posted by roveshia On March - 1 - 2010

A software based GPS for use in Windows 7 has been developed and released by Rafael Rivera and Long Zheng.

The software installs a Windows 7 Sensor into the operating system that allows third party applications to become location aware. Dubbed “Geosense for Windows”, the software uses the Sensors platform introduced in Windows 7.

Geosense is a Windows Sensor that provides positioning information. The sensor utilises the Google Location Services for WiFi and IP triangulation to provide reasonably accurate location data.

Rivera, the developer behind Geosense, claims that future updates could include support for location services such as Skyhook Wireless and Navizon, providing there’s a demand for it. A combination of different location services would improve location data.

How does it work?

The application is packaged in an installer for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 versions. The installer will create a Windows 7 Sensor named “Geosense” that will interact with Google’s location services to pinpoint your location. It works best with a Wi-Fi enabled PC or laptop but will work over any IP connection. Windows 7 will notify you each time your location is accessed by a third party application.

Why do I need it? What does it work with?

At this moment in time the Windows Sensor platform is lacking to say the least. Very few developers have built support for the Sensor platform into their products. Geosense claims that Mahtweets (twitter client), Windows 7’s weather gadget and a specially designed Google Maps client will all utilize the Sensor. Rivera confirmed Geosense are working closely with several companies to build support for Windows 7 Sensors but declined to name any organisations.

Geosense is available free for both Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit editions.

Now Google Earth available for Android

Posted by roveshia On February - 23 - 2010

Nexus One has gave a great platform to showcase the rich (and technically demanding!) features of Google Earth. With a 1GHz processor, advanced 3D graphics, and Android 2.1, Nexus One packs a lot of performance in a thin package. Ever since we got our hands on one, we have been putting it through its paces, drawing complex scenes of 3D imagery, terrain, roads, and other layers, and Nexus One never misses a beat. Now that we have put the final touches on the app, we are happy to announce that the latest member of our family is ready for the world — Google Earth for Android. This is our fastest mobile version of Google Earth yet, with a smooth framerate and a beautiful 800 x 480 screen.

With the release of Google Earth for Android, we are also introducing the Roads layer, a very popular feature of the desktop version of Google Earth. Now you can get a better sense of where you are with road labels drawn on top of the satellite imagery.

The company’s blog notes that, the new “Outlook Social Connector brings together communications history, contact information, and professional and social networking information into the Outlook experience.”

Facebook Users Photo Uploads Exceed Global Film Output

According to an interesting blog from Tom Koltai from Perceptric Pty limited, he  posted the analyzed data reported this week to conclude that Facebook users are posting more movies than the global film industry on an annual basis. Koltai arrived at this conclusion by simple math: 400 million Facebook users upload 3 billion photos per month. If a photo equals a single frame of a film and basic projectors operate a 24-25 frames per second, a ninety minute movie is about 135,000 frames. So, each month Facebook users create 22,222 ninety minute movies, whereas the global film output is only 5,100 films a year.
