The Kindle still holds on to the same 6-inch size but is 21% smaller, 15% lighter and offers 20% faster page turns and 50% better contrast than previous Kindles. The storage has been increased to 4GB and the battery is rated at 10 days with wireless on and a month without.

The new Kindle will be available in the U.S. starting on August 27 in two models; a WiFi Only Kindle for $139 and a 3G Kindle for $189. Amazon will also be releasing a UK version of the Kindle with localized pricing of £109 for the WiFi only model and £149 for the 3G model.

There is no denying that the Kindle has completely transformed the world of books, competition has popped up from every major book retailer, and really made ebooks a very popular choice for travelers.

There’s a large number of extensions available right off the bat, including some from The New York Times, Major League Baseball, Amazon and Bing.

There’s also an official Twitter extension that looks similar to the Ostrich extension we pointed out yesterday. In fact, extensions are available across several categories, like social networking, news, photos, productivity and security. Root through and find something you’ll like; we’re partial to Brett’s Tablinks extension for copying all the URLs from your open tabs.

Note that you’ll need Safari 5.0.1, which was also released today. In addition to the extensions support, Safari 5.0.1 includes more accurate top hits results in the address field and improved scrolling through MobileMe Mail. It’s also notable that the Safari Extensions Gallery is now an option in the Safari Menu, just below About Safari. A restart is required to complete installation.

A new supercomputer model has taken a leap forward in this effort though, reproducing and predicting the birth of an Indian Ocean typhoon (also called a hurricane or cyclone) five days before it became a fully formed storm.

Cyclone Nargis, as it was named, hit the country of Myanmar on May 2, 2008, with its more than 105-mph (165-kph) winds and powerful storm surge killing more than 100,000 people in the Southeast Asian country — one of the 10 deadliest cyclones on record.

To save lives from the high winds, flooding and storm surges of tropical cyclones, forecasters need to give as much advance warning as possible and the greatest degree of accuracy about when and where a storm will occur, scientists say.

Bo-wen Shen of the University of Maryland used NASA’s Pleiades supercomputer and atmospheric data to simulate the birth of Nargis in the warm Bay of Bengal waters. (Tropical storms get their start from warm water evaporating off the surface of bodies of water.) This effort could help scientists better understand how to predict the formation of these killer storms particularly in this region, where the meteorology and monitoring of cyclones is hampered by a lack of data.

The display hooks up to any Mac with a which is every late-vintage model. The cable combines a power-cable and a USB-connector, and this last will pipe the sound from your MacBook to the display, as well as send back data from the screen’s built-in iSight camera and microphone. The new Mac Pro also beefs things up. Apple’s heavy-lifter now comes with 12 processor-cores, faster graphics and SSD options and, well, did I say it has twelve cores?. This monster begins at $5,000, but you can have the 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem” for “just” $2,500. Add to this an ATI Radeon HD 5870 with 1GB of GDDR5 memory and a couple of those fancy new 27-inch Cinema Displays, and you’ll have a pretty mean setup (and a very light wallet). The new range of Mac Pros will be on sale in August.

In February, the BBC announced the plans to release a BBC News app for smartphones and mobile devices. In March, the app, along with a sports app and an iPlayer app, were indefinitely delayed after the Newspaper Publishers Association (NPA) complained to the BBC Trust that the apps were unfair to commercial rivals.

However, the BBC Trust gave the apps the go-ahead, stating that they do not “represent a significant change to the BBC’s existing public services.” In essence, the apps are justified as they are just an extension of what the BBC is already offering, merely changing with the times.

The BBC News app launched in the U.K. today for the Apple iPhone and iPad. The sport and iPlayer apps will follow shortly, with versions for other smartphone platforms including BlackBerry and Android due in the coming months.

The new beta version of Microsoft Security Essentials was launched yesterday to a limited amount of users. Here we’ll take a look at what you expect from the new version of PC security application.

This new beta version that we’ll take a look at was released through Microsoft Connect and is available on a first come first serve basis. It is not available in all countries either, so depending on your location you might not have access to it.  It is available in both 32 & 64-bit versions.

Installation and Setup

You will need to log into your Microsoft Connect account, or sign up if you don’t have one yet. Then you can download the version which is right for your OS.

Apparently there were problems downloading the file from MS Connect yesterday and they recommended a work around is to use the Microsoft File Transfer Manager (look at the below link).

Installation is quite easy following the install wizard. If you already have version 1.0 of Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) installed, you’ll be able to Upgrade.

Decide of you want to join the Customer Experience Improvement Program or not…

It will offer to turn on Windows Firewall for you. It you use another firewall application or just don’t want it turned on you can uncheck it.

Now wait while the upgrade takes place. The amount of time it takes will vary. We installed the 32-bit version on a Windows 7 Home Premium Core2 Duo system and took around three minutes.

To finish the upgrade a reboot is required.

After getting back from the Restart you can begin setting it up. The user interface has a bit of a new look, but using it is essentially the same as the current version.

If you don’t have the current version of MSE installed, there is no Restart required, it will offer to get the latest definition updates and scan your system right away.

New Features

It still has the features you’re already used to such as scheduling scans and real-time protection, and offers new features as well. One of the new interesting features for Windows 7 & Vista (not available in XP or 2003) is you can enable network protection. This will inspect your network traffic and block any suspicious connections. A very nice feature for those with a home or small business network.

Also it includes the Firewall integration that we looked at during the installation. It integrates with Internet Explorer to protect against web-based threats such as malicious scripts.

It also includes a new updated protection engine that offers better detection, easier cleanup, and better performance. We ran some fake test virus files and the detection was as good as the current version and cleanup was a breeze.

BlackBerry 6 is the latest operating system from RIM which promises to offer many new features to bring BlackBerry well and truly into the touchscreen world.

RIM released a little more information this week on the OS which it hopes will entice non-BlackBerry users to its handset range for the first time, pointing to a consumer-friendly interface that’s accessible to both business and everyday users.

Here are some things which you must know:

1. Universal search
Want to find a contact in a hurry? Well instead of heading over to the phonebook, just tap the search icon and start typing. Blackberry 6 OS provides system-wide search results as you type, much like the iOS 4’s Spotlight search. So whether it’s a contact, application or song name, you should be able to find it in super-quick time. The OS also displays search results as icons, to make finding stuff that bit faster.

2. Enhanced media playback
The media player in Blackberry 6 OS has had a revamp, displaying your album art front and centre on a carrousel, similar to iTunes’ Coverflow. RIM has made it so that all you need is on the one screen. From here you can flick through your albums, navigate through the track you’re listening to, shuffle and repeat.

3. Social Feeds
Blackberry 6 displays all of your social activity in one place, so you can quickly tap between texts, tweets and Facebook messages. All of your events; be it a friend request in Facebook, an upcoming calendar event, or an unread text appear in one place.

4. RSS Feeds
With a simple swipe to the left or right (depending on where you are), you can jump from social networking to RSS feeds, and new feeds can be added by simply entering a web address and selecting the feed you want to subscribe to.

5. Visual fluid interface
All of these new features link into the fluid interface, which sees tiles float over the top of each other to make efficient use of the screen space. The operating system never shows you more information than it needs to, helping you find the option you’re looking for quickly.

6. Blackberry messenger
Blackberry’s free messaging service is back on Blackberry 6 OS and it has been redesigned to make your conversations looks clear and crisp, with the option to attach an image, video or audio selection to your message available.

7. Simultaneous postings
Blackberry 6 OS lets you post to your Messenger, Facebook and Twitter accounts all at once, saving the need to write the same message three times.
